Myval TAVR technology will be a boon for millions of patients suffering from aortic stenosis.

The Transcatheter Aortic Heart Valve Replacement (TAVR), which will be sold under the brand name "Myval", is a minimally invasive procedure in which the doctor places a artificial valve into the patient's diseased valve via a catheter inserted through the femoral artery (large artery in groin).

It is an alternative way to replace diseased valves without undergoing traditional open heart procedure, which some patients may not receive well.

Meril is the first Indian company to commercially make this therapy available in the country. Through the commercialisation of this technology, Meril will soon bring the next generation treatment modality to thousands of patients across the country and globally,

India's First Artificial Heart Valve Technology Launched

The Transcatheter Aortic Heart Valve Replacement (TAVR), which will be sold under the brand name "Myval", is a minimally invasive procedure in which the doctor places an artificial valve into the patient's diseased valve via a catheter inserted through the femoral artery (large artery in groin).

TAVR is increasingly becoming a preferred alternative for surgical valve replacement because it is associated with faster recovery time.

"The first patient to receive Myval has completed 1.5 years and is living a symptom-free productive life. The valve was effective in relieving the patient's symptoms and reducing the death and hospitalisation from the aortic stenosis," according to Ravinder Singh Rao, Interventional Cardiologist at Eternal.

Indigenously designed and manufactured artificial aortic valve launched in india

"The development of this valve, which is implanted non-surgically through a catheter is a great achievement for the 'Made in India' initiative that such an important R&D has happened from India in a field which till now has been dominated by only American devices," Principal Investigator Ashok Seth, Chairman of Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, told IANS.

TAVR is increasingly becoming a preferred alternative for surgical valve replacement because it is associated with faster recovery time.

A first in Maharashtra: Mitral vale in heart replaced through minimal invasion

“She was in Pune when she started feeling breathless and was unable to sleep and complained of unease. We rushed her to Thane and after diagnosis the doctors assured us that they will not conduct an open-heart surgery and but would replace the mitral valve using another procedure where we would insert the new Indian-made valve in the existing degenerated valve,” Kotwal said.

This was the first time in the state that a mitral valve was inserted in an already existing mitral valve and that the Indian-made valve costs Rs. 12 lakh, which is half the cost of a valve sold by international firms, Dr Surase claimed.

Indigenous transcatheter aortic valve replacement technology (TAVR) makes India proud

The country’s first indigenous Transcatheter Aortic Heart Valve Replacement (TAVR) device, an important milestone that made the Indian med-tech industry proud, was successfully developed in this tiny town.
Meril Life Sciences, the Vapi-based med-tech company received approval for launching its indigenous TAVR technology— Myval THV—from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) in October. With this, Meril has become the first Indian company in the world to make this technology commercially available, promising to give long-established multinational brands tough competition.
TAVR, an established treatment modality for patients who are at a high risk or unwilling to undergo open heart valve replacement surgery, is a minimally invasive procedure in which the doctor inserts a replacement valve into the patient’s native diseased valve via a catheter inserted through the femoral artery. This is an alternative way to replace diseased valves without undergoing the traditional open heart procedure.

Trend is changing, now patients are treated with TAVR therapy: Dr. Praveen Chandra

Progress and trends in Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Therapy (TAVR)
Yeah, this is a fairly new therapy and it has been developed in the last 10 years, more than 10 years now. This is known as TAVR therapy, which means Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement- which in general means that we are replacing one of the valves of the heart without doing any surgery.

This is a very interesting thing that has happened in last many years worldwide and the trends are like this that in Europe and United States, the number of valve replacements of the aortic valve of the heart, they have been done more without surgery approach, which is known as TAVR rather than the surgical approach.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement, a strong alternative to treat aortic stenosis

For patients suffering from aortic stenosis, a degenerative valvular disease that worsens over time, transcatheter aortic valve replacement or TAVR is a blessing. This minimally invasive procedure repairs the aortic heart valve without removing the old, damaged valve. Instead, it places a replacement valve into the aortic valve's place through a catheter or tube inserted through the femoral artery (large artery in groin). These procedures can thus be done through small openings that leave all the chest bones in place thereby resulting in quicker recovery post procedure.

Dr Ravinder Singh Rao is an interventional cardiologist and director of TAVI & Structural Heart Disease Program, EHCC, Jaipur.

India’s first artificial heart valve technology launched

“Meril is the first Indian company to commercially make this therapy available in the country. Through the commercialisation of this technology, Meril will soon bring the next generation treatment modality to thousands of patients across the country and globally,” said Sanjeev Bhatt, VP Corporate Strategy, Meril Life Sciences.

TAVR has been dominated by US-based medical devices makers Medtronics and Edwards Lifesciences.

“The novel Myval technology is associated with zero new pacemaker implantation rates post procedure (which is an important benefit for the patient already treated for valve replacement). Pacemaker is an additional device that may be placed post TAVR procedure,” Bhatt told IANS.
